Bioethics And Continuity Law
Once medicine can rebuild bodies and alter species, the hardest questions are no longer technical. They are legal and philosophical.
Core Disputes
- Is a renewed person legally continuous with the old body?
- How much DNA correction counts as therapy and how much counts as redesign?
- Do uplifted or designed peoples inherit full personhood automatically?
- How much augmentation can employers, militaries, or states demand?
- Is a recorded mind-state a person, property, evidence, or none of the above?
Continuity Law
Most advanced systems distinguish between:
- preserved-person continuity through living brain transfer
- gradual restorative intervention with continuity safeguards
- clone or snapshot-derived persons, whose legal status is often disputed
This is one of the most important legal distinctions in the setting.
Why It Matters In Story
Bioethics law can drive inheritance disputes, military coercion, citizenship conflict, religious tension, and criminal exploitation just as strongly as war or politics.
