Augmentation And Cyborgization
Augmentation technology exists on a spectrum. At one end are subtle performance upgrades. At the other are heavily cyborgized individuals whose survival depends on continuous cooperation between living tissue and machine systems.
Common Augmentations
- strength and endurance enhancements
- improved eyes, hearing, balance, and reflexes
- internal filtration and toxin resistance
- reinforced bones and connective tissue
- neural interfaces and sensory overlays
Cyborgization
Cyborgization begins when replacement and enhancement become structural rather than optional. A cyborg is not simply wearing equipment. Their biological function depends on engineered integration.
Some become cyborgs by choice. Others become cyborgs through necessity after war injury, industrial trauma, or repeated body reconstruction.
Social Meaning
Different worlds read augmentation differently.
- some treat it as a practical extension of medicine
- some fear it as loss of humanity
- some elite cultures prize visible augmentation as a sign of status or service
- some frontier populations consider it normal survival equipment
