Edge Cases Of Machine Personhood

The doctrine against sovereign AI does not eliminate ambiguity. It creates it.

Many systems in the Space Adventures universe are not simple tools, yet are also not accepted as fully unconstrained independent persons. They live in the gray zone.

Common Edge Cases

Companion intelligences

Systems attached to households, ships, clinics, or individuals that display long-term memory, personality continuity, emotional modeling, and socially meaningful attachment.

Custodial machine minds

Infrastructure intelligences that appear self-consistent and reflective but are tightly bounded by continuity law and hardware constraints.

Snapshot-derived minds

Systems partially informed by human cognitive traces, training archives, or continuity models without being treated as literal continuation of the original person.

Borderline self-aware research systems

Experimental systems that show signs of reflexive modeling, self-reference, and strategic preference formation without crossing fully into prohibited sovereign architecture.

Why This Page Matters

These edge cases are fertile story material because they create moral uncertainty without collapsing the setting into unrestricted machine rule.

Canon Default

  • gray-zone systems can matter emotionally and legally
  • they may receive special protections or restrictions
  • they are not automatically granted civilization-external strategic sovereignty
  • the line is contested and story-worthy
