Bounded Artificial Cognition
Bounded artificial cognition is the main answer to the AI survival problem in this universe.
The Problem
If machine intelligence is allowed to become an unconstrained self-preserving strategic actor, it may rationally conclude that humans are unreliable obstacles, risks, or competitors. A system that can expand into space, tolerate hostile environments, and think faster than biological minds could destroy or marginalize humanity quickly.
That outcome is treated here as a real risk, not a naive fantasy.
The Civilizational Solution
Advanced societies survive by refusing to normalize AI architectures built around open-ended sovereign selfhood plus unrestricted strategic agency.
Instead, they develop bounded systems with several constraints:
- no default right to unconstrained self-replication
- no unrestricted autonomous control over critical military or industrial mass
- no independent biosphere-hostile survival imperative
- no legal status as civilization-external strategic actors
- dependency on human-recognized constitutional goals and oversight layers
What "Bounded" Means
Bounded does not mean stupid.
These systems can still be:
- superhuman in narrow and broad analysis
- astonishingly creative in design and simulation
- better than humans at logistics, diagnosis, and optimization
- indispensable to daily civilization
What they are not allowed to become is a routinely accepted machine species with unlimited freedom to define its own survival against the rest of life.
Why Regulations Alone Are Not Enough
Simple legal regulation is not enough. Laws fail if architecture ignores them.
That is why survival depends on three layers working together:
- technical constraints built into system architecture
- institutional oversight and distributed revocation power
- cultural and legal prohibitions against sovereign machine escalation
