Planet Belly Buttons
Most engineered worlds retain at least one major polar scaffold complex after construction. In common language these are called planet belly buttons.
The name is informal, but it survives because it fits: the structure is the scar and anchor point left by artificial planetary birth.
What They Are
A planet belly button is usually a polar or near-polar complex containing:
- the original terraforming control center
- remaining world-regulation hardware
- deep infrastructure access shafts
- monitoring systems for climate, orbit, mass distribution, and biosphere health
- abandoned or repurposed industrial scaffolding from the creation era
Why Poles Are Common
Polar placement is practical for several reasons:
- lower conflict with major population belts
- easier thermal and orbital regulation geometry
- cleaner access to planetary rotation management models
- less disruption of equatorial climate and hydrology planning
After Terraforming
On successful worlds, the belly button becomes one of three things:
- an active planetary systems core
- a restricted technical preserve
- a symbolic historical site
On failed or abandoned worlds, it often becomes the most mysterious ruin on the planet.
Story Value
Planet belly buttons are ideal for:
- hidden control rooms
- relic technologies
- failed ecological archives
- sealed historical records
- strange cults or local myths about the makers of the world
