Named Ship Classes
This page defines reusable ship classes for the Space Adventures universe. These are not one-off hero ships. They are recurring hardware families that can appear across stories.
Civilian And Commercial Classes
Sparrow courier
- Role: urgent message transfer, diplomatic packet movement, elite passenger transport
- Profile: fast, lightly crewed, low endurance, high navigation quality
- Story use: time-critical missions, discreet travel, VIP movement
Manta merchant
- Role: medium-volume trade across stable wrap corridors
- Profile: reliable, modular cargo spine, conservative field envelope
- Story use: merchant crews, customs stories, frontier contracts
Pilgrim liner
- Role: civilian migration and long-range passenger service
- Profile: strong life-support redundancy, comfort-biased layout, predictable route discipline
- Story use: refugee arcs, pilgrimages, political evacuation, class tension
Foundry hauler
- Role: industrial freight, heavy components, station construction loads
- Profile: massive cargo bias, slow local handling, dependent on escorts in risky regions
- Story use: logistics, colony building, labor politics, salvage
Exploration And Frontier Classes
Lantern surveyor
- Role: route charting, anomaly inspection, first-contact support, science missions
- Profile: advanced sensors, drone capacity, moderate self-defense, long independent endurance
- Story use: exploration, mystery, discovery, scientific dispute
Hearth colony carrier
- Role: settlement transport and early-stage outpost support
- Profile: habitat-heavy, fabrication support, medical capacity, fragile strategic value
- Story use: colonization, fragile hope, convoy defense, supply crises
Anchor rescue tender
- Role: emergency response, field recovery, tug and stabilization work
- Profile: heavy utility systems, medical and engineering teams, exceptional docking flexibility
- Story use: disaster response, rescue arcs, technical heroism
Security And Military Classes
Pike escort
- Role: convoy defense, patrol, anti-raider duty
- Profile: compact, durable, strong sensors for its size, long service life
- Story use: border friction, convoy action, policing contested lanes
Ward patrol cruiser
- Role: regional security, anti-smuggling operations, political presence
- Profile: balanced combat and endurance, capable independent deployment
- Story use: tense inspections, local war, sector governance
Bastion fleet carrier
- Role: command and force projection
- Profile: large coordination spaces, strike-craft support, strategic wrap capability, heavy logistics burden
- Story use: war campaigns, political intimidation, evacuation cover
Obelisk siege platform
- Role: gate denial, fortress assault, static theater domination
- Profile: enormous mass, poor flexibility, terrifying local effect
- Story use: escalated war, blockade, existential threat
Canon Guidance
These classes are broad enough to support multiple builders, regional variants, refits, and generational upgrades.
For example:
- a Sparrow courier from a wealthy core world may be elegant and overengineered
- a frontier Sparrow may be rugged, improvised, and barely legal
- both remain recognizably the same class family
How To Use These Classes In Stories
- Use civilian classes to show economic and social texture.
- Use exploration classes to open mystery and expansion arcs.
- Use patrol and escort classes to ground law and violence.
- Use capital classes sparingly so they keep narrative weight.
Visualization Reference
Bastion fleet carrier: An enormous command warship with the footprint of a city district. Strike craft visible on external launch rails along each flank. Wrap field generator spines protrude above the dorsal hull. Escort vessels the size of office buildings are dwarfed beside it.
Prompt: photorealistic hard science fiction, vast fleet carrier warship in orbit, city-district scale hull with strike craft on external launch rails, prominent wrap field generator spines, multiple escort cruisers nearby dwarfed by comparison, dramatic orbital lighting, cold space background, cinematic military science fiction, no fantasy elements
Pilgrim liner: A long civilian transport vessel with a wide habitat section, large observation galleries, and identifying route markings. Surrounded by smaller escort and customs craft at a gate hub approach lane.
Prompt: photorealistic science fiction, large civilian passenger liner approaching a gate hub, wide habitat cylinder with observation gallery windows lit warm from inside, route identification markings on the hull, customs and escort vessels nearby, gate ring structure visible in the background, contrast between civilian warmth and cold deep space, cinematic composition
